As we approach the annual Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Orlando, there are indications it will be rather lively. Actually, most of the time when Baptists meet in large numbers, things get pretty raucous! I started attending conventions in 1968. I don’t think I’ve missed a one in all these years.
I’ve been in some wild ones. I was there in 1979 when Adrian Rogers was elected and shook the convention. I was there in 1985 when Charles Stanley was elected as president and caused great alarm in the moderate camp. I was there in 1988 when I was elected president! Pretty lively and interesting conventions. The election of a new president this year will create a great deal of interest.
This year’s convention will also feature the report and recommendations of the Great Commission Resurgence task force. The report has already been released and is being studied by Southern Baptists. I would encourage those planning to attend the convention to be as well informed as possible. We do not want to be an Acts 19:32 convention - “Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.”
